Fostering independence: our personalised approach

At the Bali Family Foundation, we understand that true transformation comes from seeing every individual and family as unique.

By being deeply embedded on the ground in Bali, we gain invaluable insight into each person's strengths and specific needs. This enables us to tailor our support in ways that are most productive and sustainable, ensuring that our efforts lead to long-term independence and self-reliance rather than dependency.

What works for one person may not work for another, and our agile, personalised approach is key to breaking cycles of poverty and building brighter futures.

Changing lives

For seven transformative years, the Bali Family Foundation has been a beacon of hope in east Bali.

We’ve supported 34 families to build independent, sustainable livelihoods, helping them stand on their own feet with confidence and pride.

Today, families are running a beachside warung, taking their fruit to market, operating a laundromat, running a massage business, baking cakes for income, and working on building sites with the right tools and support.

Our elderly community members, once isolated, now enjoy social interaction and contribute meaningfully through engaging activities like bingo with food prizes, and rearing livestock for sale, fostering a true sense of belonging.

Real support builds livelihoods, confidence, and community.

Ensuring safety

At times, we have discovered families living in deeply unsafe, unsanitary, and heart breaking conditions — homes with collapsing roofs, crumbling walls, and, in one instance, a small family sheltering in a half-walled pigsty.

When situations like this arise, our community responds with extraordinary compassion. Our members have stepped forward to raise the funds needed to make urgent repairs, and together we have completely rebuilt ten homes and made significant improvements to a further six. One of these was for a 10-year-old orphan living alone, whom we also surrounded with additional care and ongoing support.

A safe home is fundamental to wellbeing, dignity, and hope. When we uncover housing conditions that put lives at risk, we act quickly — because no one should have to live without safety or shelter.

When compassion leads, people are protected.

Changing futures

Beyond immediate, life-changing support, we are deeply proud to have walked alongside more than 100 children as they completed their schooling—many of whom would never have reached high school without our assistance. Today, every one of them is employed, building independent lives with confidence and hope.

We have supported eight young people to complete university studies, resulting in a qualified nurse, several business graduates, and two teachers, with a further four students nearing completion. In addition, 15 young people have pursued vocational education and are now building careers in hospitality across Bali and on cruise ships, supporting themselves and their families with pride.

This commitment to education, possibility, and a belief in a brighter future has helped foster lasting change, contributing to zero teenage pregnancies over the past six years in the communities we serve.

When hope is nurtured, futures change.

"Since we received BFF sponsorship, the worry in my heart has become lighter. Even when there is little work and my name is not called, I know my family will still eat. This support has removed so much stress from our lives. Suksma."

"Before, it felt like a dream to be able to have a child graduate with a university degree, but now it has come true and it has changed our family's life. I feel incredibly happy and thankful."

"Before the bingo afternoons, our days were very lonely. Since BFF began them, we gather, we laugh, and for the first time in my life I feel joy like this. I can bring food home and contribute. I am no longer a burden to my family."
